To fulfill her role against the Culling Game, Maki returned to the unwelcoming Zenin household to collect cursed tools, greeted by Naoya's taunts about her disfigured appearance. Ignoring him, Maki headed underground, where her mother reminded her of the forbidden cursed warehouse access. However, Maki revealed Megumi, as the new clan head per Naobito's will, had granted her permission. In a flashback, a reluctant Megumi had initially refused the position until Maki insisted, explaining he would inherit the family fortune, information on the Big Three Families and Headquarters, and the prized Ten Shadows Technique he had achieved Domain Expansion with. Maki knew she lacked acceptance to lead and make the household a place for her sister Mai. Presently, Maki's mother protested as she unsealed the warehouse doors, only to find her father Ogi already inside, having removed all cursed tools in anticipation while holding the injured Mai hostage. Ogi revealed his plan, approved by Jinichi, to execute Megumi, Maki, and Mai as rebels plotting to free Gojo, taking advantage of Headquarters' notice deeming it a crime. Separately, Jinichi briefed Naoya - while Megumi maintained better relations with the Gojo and Kamo clans, killing him outright would undermine the Zenin's standing in the looming power vacuum. This idea to boost Ogi's credibility was his own. Facing Maki, Ogi activated Falling Blossom Emotion for a deadly sword duel, keeping Mai alive as contingency leverage. Maki wielded the cursed tool Dragon-Bone, feigning a single strike while intending follow-up blows enhanced by ejecting accumulated force. When Ogi questioned why Naobito led over him, Maki retorted about his willingness to kill his children, initiating combat. Blocking Ogi's opening slash, Maki's Dragon-Bone counterattack shattered his blade. However, Ogi instantaneously rematerialized his sword as raging cursed flames, grievously injuring Maki before she could finish him. As she fell, Ogi shed a tear, revealing his inability to lead stemmed from his children's worthlessness.
